National Weather Service LogoA major winter storm impacted much of the Midwest on February 1st and 2nd, earlier this year. Record snowfall was reported in many locations, with amounts ranging from 8" to 20" in much of central, western and northern Illinois. Wind gusting from 40 to 60 mph created drifts more than 6 feet high.

In addition, more than 4" of sleet and severe icing of trees and power lines impacted areas of south central and southeast Illinois - where power outages lasted nearly a week in spots.

Roads were closed, including several interstates, and nearly 4,000 people had to be rescued across the state by the Illinois National Guard and local emergency officials. Schools and businesses were closed - bringing much of the state to a standstill for a few days. Nearly 60% of the state was declared a Federal Disaster area.
